The main force driving almost ALL of this is that the wave of new technology has finally met the wave of social change. The next big thing is no longer being championed by the few, but rather is being adopted and even reinvented by the many! Facebook, Twitter and other platforms that are more accessible and more easily shaped by the masses are driving media and mindshare in a way previously only accomplished by search and big media! What this means is that the silicon revolution in finally being being carried to the ends of the earth on the backs of a social revolution that values connection and inclusion more than segmentation and consumption. Big assertions, true. But one need only look to Hollywood and the changes unfolding in traditional media to see how this cart is pulling the horses!

Television is firmly established online; Films are streaming, box offices are struggling and big starts and plot formulae are no longer foolproof; Print media is on the edge of re-creating itself or burning up in the process. The iPad and a host of imitators are racing to reinvent publishing, print media, computing and a whole lot more! When we decided to brand ourselves around the concepts of Samurai and Dojo our choice reflected a conscious decision to focus on process! Mastering, simplifying and conveying the elegance of process was our way of putting forward what we though lay at the heart of today’s web and at the heart of the Open Source Software movement. Namely, the ability to reduce complex process to simplicity and then replicate that process for repeatable success.

Ancient Samurai were masters of execution. That tradition was carried down through the ages. Whether it was creating the perfect cup of tea, executing a perfect sword strike or pulling off a double roundhouse kick, all of the arts martial or otherwise can first be reduced to a Kata (型 or 形 literally: “form” or “way”.) Only once a form or way has been truly mastered, can one begin to imbue their execution with the beauty the elevates that execution into the realm of art.

Our mission is to define and convey these Kata. This “Way” of the Samurai. Both Silicon and Social. It is at the intersection of these waves, one technical and another societal that the alchemy that is transforming the landscapes of business, technology, media and society at large lays.
